![]() ![]() My experience with tapas bars is that most things are fried and greasy, and after about 3-4 plates, things become similar in their tastes and appearance. Each item was beautifully presented on moderate sized dishes as if a tapas bar and meant to share. Across the evening, we ordered various dishes, including varietal mushrooms, baked cheese, steak tartare, green salad, soft shell crab, and the cod - my labels are not doing justice to the care and nuance in which the dishes were prepared - they were each exquisite. The waiter was very helpful in walking through the numerous offerings of beers and wines. We found ourselves a table, and were greeted immediately by the wait staff with napkins, waters, and asking if we'd like something. the inside and dimly lit, yet lively for a Tuesday night at 8:00 pm. The entrance is through a small walkway entering from the side of it. ![]() My daughter lives nearby and we walked over to what was framed as a "neighborhood" spot serving local foods. Rootstock is rated among the 50 best bars in Chicago. For dessert, we shared double orders of Klug Farm apricots, strawberries and blueberries with whipped cream fraiche and elder flower syrup. ![]() Our friends opted for an eight-ounce Slagel Farms sirloin steak with herb butter, arugula, parmesan and lemon and steelhead trout with snap peas and onion. I couldn't resist a house special, a dry-aged Slagel Farms grass-fed burger with bacon aioli, red onion and cheddar cheese with greens and house pickles. For the main course, my wife had six snow crab claws with charred scallion mayo, Meyer lemon and herbs. We started with marinated olives, hand-cut fries, Cabot cheddar, La Tur goat cheese, Alpine-style cheese, prosciutto, Blac Garlic salami and mortadella. Our friends took advantage of the extensive wine list while we browsed the menu. Located at 945 North California Avenue, at Augusta, in the Humboldt Park/West Town/Ukrainian Village neighborhood, it opened in 2009 and invites guests from 5 to 10 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5 to 11 on Friday and Saturday. The menu, featuring Slagel Farms meats and Klug. My wife and I don't drink but our friends do. ![]() It is a trendy watering hole, a gastropub, a popular neighborhood wine bar. Rootstock Wine & Beer Bar is back in business after taking a summer break.
